A good friend of mine, someone I still play with to this day, brought me down to Austin. For a long weekend we did nothing but take in the town and pass guitars around while drinking lone star beer. At this time, my buddy, and his dad who was living in Austin brought me out of my songwriting shell. With this new confidence I decided to move to Austin permanently. At first it was just a quick little project I made for myself, something I would do within a day or two. As it was happening I began realizing there were melodies for these tracks, and I figured I should just let the songs work themselves out. Of the seven tracks, one of them is an older song of mine I decided to rework and it fit right into place. Others are poems that were sitting in my notebook, and the rest I wrote while recording. The process of this was incredibly relaxed, and that is something I am extremely grateful for. Everything seemed to fit into place perfectly and I was able to create something I am very proud of. I have never been the best at explaining myself, or vocally expressing my thoughts and feelings (enter music). Even right now, typing this out is really draining and a little stressful. But I feel it needs to be done, and that the album deserves it. There have been a lot of changes in my life in a short amount of time. Among those are changes I have consciously made. The others seem to have been the product of those changes. The content of this album although vast, is quite personal as it carries my thoughts, anxieties, love, sadness, and discomfort with not only what is happening around me, but what is happening within me. Simultaneously, becoming the happiest I have ever been in my life. To my friends, and my family. I know I have not been physically present in your lives, but I think about you every day. My love and gratitude for you and the impact you have had on my life is unwavering. It grows by the second. Then there was my folks’ music library. My father an actor, and a drummer in his own right, had quite the ear for a good song. No matter the genre, he taught me the importance and power of a good melody, as well as the harmony along with it. Tom Petty was our shared obsession. We knew every line and would harmonize, and of course sing the guitar solos. My dad would point out small things in the background of a song, mixed way back there. For example, there’s a cowbell or woodblock part in Tom Petty’s song “Learning to Fly” right after he sings that line, way in the background, you can barely hear it through some speakers, but it’s there and my dad would point it out every time. It fascinated me. I immersed myself in Punk, as well as the indie underground scene of the late 80’s and early 90’s. At the end of the day from blues to jazz, to folk, rock and roll, to pop, anything out there. I would keep what affected me close, and the rest was garbage.
